Based on my years of working out in my parent’s basement (with my old York Universal machine), my experience as the fitness trainer for the University women’s basketball and volleyball teams, and thanks to the recent research studies I had read on interval training, I created a powerful, fast, effective, total-body, fat burning, bodysculpting workout that I was able to finish in less than 45 minutes.

While my years of working out and staying active were crucial to the development of Turbulence Training, the secret weapon behind this fat loss system was the scientific research showing that interval training was better than cardio and that women could boost their metabolism with resistance training.

My Research Proved Interval Training Was Better Than Slow, Boring Cardio for Female Fat Loss

The biggest mistake personal trainers make when it comes to designing a female fat loss workout is to tell their clients to do a lot of cardio.

But the answer to ending a female fat loss plateau is not to do more cardio…instead, the truth is that women should do LESS cardio and should switch to interval training instead!

Just take a look at these three groundbreaking studies published in the last few years…

Research study #1 showed…

That even when men and women do an hour of cardio per day for an entire year, they only lose 4-6 pounds on average. (Reference: Obesity 15:1496-1512, 2007.)

Research study #2 showed…

That some subjects end up overeating by over 250 calories per day when they start a cardio program and end up GAINING weight. (Reference: International Journal of Obesity 32: 177-184, 2008.)

Research study #3 showed…

That interval training is better than slow cardio for helping women burn belly fat. (Reference: Trapp, E.G. & Boutcher, S.H., University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia.)

And way back when I first developing Turbulence Training, there were two little-known studies that stood out and had a huge impact on the Turbulence Training workouts used by thousands of men and women today.

In fact, I almost didn’t see the first study. It was tucked away in the corner of a major scientific conference, and if I hadn’t been searching high and low for every study on fat burning exercise, I would have totally missed this hidden gem.

In this revolutionary study, researchers put women through two different resistance training workouts. In the first session, the female subjects did a workout using an intensity that allowed them to perform 12 repetitions per set. In the second session, the intensity was increased so the subjects could complete only 8 repetitions per set.

The difference in workouts was small, but the effects were dramatic. The researchers found that the 8 repetitions per set workout caused women to burn more calories during the recovery period after the workout. This is due to what I call “turbulence” that is put on the muscles during hard workouts.

Therefore, the more intense your workouts, the more “turbulence” you put on your muscles, and the more energy required during the recovery period, and thus, the more fat you burn!

That is what Turbulence Training means to you!

Research Update: In 2007, I stumbled across another remarkable study and what might be one of the most important pieces of research to ever support Turbulence Training. Let me tell you about it…

First, the research study was performed at Purdue University, where they had dozens of men (and even women) over the age of 60 start a 12-week resistance training program. None of the subjects were instructed to change their diet or do any cardio. All they had to do was three days per week of resistance training.

And at the end of the 12 weeks, the researchers were shocked at the results. Not only did the subjects gain four pounds of lean mass (including muscle), but they also lost four pounds of fat.

These men and women, with an average age of more than 60, managed to gain muscle and lose fat at the SAME time. Now just imagine what Turbulence Training can do for you when you combine the resistance training, interval training, and Dr. Chris Mohr’s fat loss nutrition guidelines.

These studies clearly show that resistance training is a key to helping you burn fat and sculpt your body. But what about cardio?

Well, back in 1999, long before research confirmed you could sculpt your muscles and lose fat at the same time, I was also busy investigating the truth about cardio for fat loss. And you’re going to be surprised by what I found.

The second critical study to the development of Turbulence Training was the classic cardio versus interval training study completed at Laval University in Quebec City. This was the first ever battle in the “cardio wars”, pitting old-school slow cardio against the more intense workouts known as interval training.

When it was all said and done, the subjects in the interval training group burned more fat than the group that did the slow cardio, even though the cardio group exercised more.

Research Update: Over 12 years later, the second battle in the “cardio wars” was reported in a research study from Sydney, Australia. In this study, one group of women completed 20 minutes of interval training three times per week while another group of women did 40 minutes of slow cardio three times per week.

The results were shocking. Not only did the interval training women lose more belly fat than the cardio group, but the results showed the slow cardio barely caused the women to lose any stomach fat at all! That’s why I keep telling my clients to “Just Say NO to Cardio”. You simply do NOT need to do long, slow cardio workouts to burn belly fat.
